WIDEN advised Energy gates on the acquisition of Kaunas BESS
January 20, 2026

Energy gates, part of the DS1 Group, which operates in the energy infrastructure sector, has acquired Kaunas BESS, a 50 MW battery energy storage system park developer, from Albatros Projects GmbH. The latter is controlled by Aquila Clean Energy, an investment management company specializing in energy investments. Energy gates acquired 100% of the shares in Kaunas BESS.

Energy gates is an investment management company focused on the development of large-scale renewable energy projects in the Baltic countries. The company develops projects that integrate renewables, strengthen the resilience of electricity grids, and contribute to a sustainable energy future.

Arminas Petraitis, Energy gates CEO, said:

“This acquisition further strengthens Energy gates renewable projects’ development in the Baltics. The project is the third BESS asset in our portfolio and an important milestone reflecting our confidence in the Lithuanian market and our ability to develop, invest in, and realize value from high-quality storage assets that support grid flexibility, renewable integration, and long-term energy security.”

Andrew Wojtek, Aquila Clean Energy CEO, said:

“The successful closing of the project underscores our ability to identify and develop high-quality energy infrastructure assets that meet the evolving needs of European electricity systems. This divestment is a part of our portfolio strategy to realize value from our development pipeline and to further drive the energy transition.”

WIDEN team advised Energy gates on all legal aspects of the transaction: conducted due diligence, advised during negotiations, and prepared transaction documents. Partner Džiuginta Balčiūnė, Senior Associates Haroldas Kupstas, Tomas Janušauskis, and Guoda Zagorskė worked on the project.
